Carlos Basso (Vina Amalia) Cabernet Sauvignon Reservado

About the Wine

Within Argentina the Basso family has always been known for their excellent Cabernet.  Walk into a good restaurant in Buenos Aires and you are likely to find Basso Cabernet on the wine list, and very often with a proprietor's “recomendado” mark beside it.  With it's high elevation and Southern location, their vineyard in La Consulta (named Finca La Amalia) produces some of the most interesting Cabernet fruit in the country.  Two separate pickings one week apart give the wine additional complexity and balance.  This Cabernet tastes like it was made in Europe, but with that South American difference. Viva la diferencia!

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Wine Type: Red Wine

Origin: Argentina

Appellation: San Carlos (Altamira), Mendoza

Elaboration: 60% of the wine was aged seven months in French and American oak

Tasting Notes

Intense red color.  Elegant aromas and flavors of red berries, marmalade, baking spices, and earth.  Terrific structure, with medium weight tannins and refreshing acidity.  This is an excellent Cabernet that holds it own against any European Cabernet.  And, as is true with all good Cabernets, it blends well with other red wines, such as Malbec and Merlot and has been put to good use by the Basso family. (See and try their Cabernet/Malbec and Cabernet/Merlot blends).
