Tabali Late Harvest Muscat

About the Wine

 

One of Chile’s most progressive independent producers, Vina Tabali is located six hours north of Santiago in the up-and-coming cool climate of Limari Valley. Founder Guillermo Luksic was the first person to plant vines in Limari in 1993. The Limari Valley sits at 700 feet elevation just southwest of the Atacama Desert, which is the driest place on Earth (no recorded rainfall in history...man, that’s dry, luckily for us, the wine is wet).  For this wine, the fruit is handpicked and placed in 20kg cases so there is no breakage of the grapes.  The cool climate is ideal for developing Botrytis or “Noble Rot.”  

 

[Botrytis or “Noble Rot”  is the benevolent form of a grey fungus, Botrytis cinerea, affecting wine grapes. Infestation by Botrytis requires moist conditions. If the weather stays wet, the malevolent form, "grey rot," can destroy crops of grapes. Grapes typically become infected with Botrytis when they are ripe. If they are then exposed to drier conditions and become partially raisined this form of infection brought about by the partial drying process is known as noble rot. Grapes when picked at a certain point during infestation can produce particularly fine and concentrated sweet wine.]

Tasting Notes

 

Golden yellow in color, on the nose is amazingly rich, complex, elegant, deep and expressive.  It shows unique quality, plenty of dried apricots, honey, papaya and great botrytis character.  On the palate is unctuous, smooth and rich, with nice acidity giving the wine a great balance and refreshing edge.  Very long, intense and velvety finish.
